European Commission, Berlaymont building, Schuman, Brussels

This was the 23rd edition of the Open Doors Day which also marked 70 years since the end of World War II, and the 65th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. The Schuman Declaration – which proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) -was presented by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman on 9 May 1950. The ECSC - whose founding members were France, West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg – was the first of a series of international European institutions which would ultimately become the European Union.

Visitors to the DG Energy stand came to tour a 'smart and energy efficient' house, to try out climate and energy bikes and to learn about energy efficiency labels now on many household products sold in the EU.
